We are excited to announce that we have expanded our speech therapy services to our Counseling Center program, a first in The Children’s Place’s 48-year history. Speech has long been incorporated in our Day Treatment program, but this new expansion means that children who are receiving mental health therapy in our Counseling Center will now be able to qualify for and receive speech therapy at The Children’s Place.
When a child experiences a traumatic event, this can cause delays in their speech and language development. Expressive and receptive language delays impact a child’s ability to put thoughts and ideas into words, share feelings, and understand the language necessary to learn. Children may also have delays in speech sound development and difficulty pronouncing words. When a child cannot communicate clearly, this can lead to frustration and additional challenges. With individualized speech services, children can build the communication skills they need to grow and thrive!
This new service gives the opportunity for children currently receiving therapy in the Counseling Center to be evaluated by our speech-language pathologist. If they qualify, they will be able to receive a weekly individual speech therapy session. We conducted an initial survey of families in the Counseling Center program and found abundant interest. Seven evaluations have already been scheduled in the first few weeks of this service, with a capacity to serve up to eight children each week.
Thank you to all who give so generously to The Children’s Place to make opportunities like this possible for the children and families we serve!
