Favorite Children's Books for Pride Month
Books are a great way to explore new ideas with young children and talk about complex topics as a family. This June in honor of Pride Month, our staff have selected a few favorite books featuring LGBTQ+ characters and representing a wide range of families.
"I Want to Be a Vase" by Julio Torres
Tyler Johnson, one of our Early Educators, shares about “I Want to Be a Vase” by Julio Torres. The story focuses on a plunger who wishes to be a vase. Some tell the plunger that he needs to be a plunger, but through the story, it turns out that many of the other household items also wish they were something different or could try something different. This book offers a great way to celebrate diversity and inclusivity in an approachable way.
"Love Makes a Family" by Sophie Beers
Phoebe Crouch, our Expressive Art Therapist, shares one of her favorites, “Love Makes a Family” by Sophie Beers. This book, aimed at toddlers and preschoolers, depicts a wide range of families, including two dads, grandparents as primary caregivers, single parents and more.
"My Shadow is Pink" by Scott Stuart
Allie Luca, one of our Child & Family Therapists, shares about “My Shadow is Pink,” by Scott Stuart. The book reflects on the idea that everyone can be themselves and be accepted for who they want to be.
"Pringle & Finn" by Paul Castle
Candis Boily, our Director of Counseling and Family Support Services, shares about “Pringle & Finn” by Paul Castle. This book tells the adventures of two penguins as they deliver wedding cakes throughout the animal kingdom, culminating in the creation of their own wedding cake.
