Meet Tammy

The Children’s Place is proud to host interns throughout the year who help with a wide range of our programs. This March, as we celebrate National Social Work Month, we wanted to take a moment to spotlight one of our talented interns, Tammy Bui:

Why did you choose to study social work?

I chose to study social work because I have always had this deep feeling that I wanted to be in some sort of helping profession. Once I learned the ins and outs of social work, I immediately fell in love with it. My values, beliefs, and standards for myself are an exact reflection of the social work profession. This alignment makes me feel extremely confident in my decision to pursue this and I am so excited to do so!

What do you do in your role at The Children’s Place?

At The Children’s Place, I am often working hands-on in the classrooms and observing assessments and therapy services. I am trying to be as immersed as possible at this organization, from working with our clients firsthand to behind the scenes. Overall, I am utilizing and obtaining more knowledge on the many different functions of the organization, which is helping prepare me for my future profession.

What have the highlights been so far in your internship?

A highlight in my internship thus far is the feeling of being a part of a change. When I am working with the children, there is such a warm feeling knowing that I am utilizing trauma-informed care and working towards early interventions as I’ve learned in my courses. In my short time here, I have already seen a few of the children get a stronger grasp on coping mechanisms, motor skills, or language, which goes to show how well this method is implemented within this organization.

Where do you hope to go next in your career?

I plan to experience different sectors of social work to have a well-rounded experience with all populations. I want to give all areas a try. I will seek to deeply understand and learn more about different methods of helping people. I can tell this may be a hardship for me as I’ve grown to love working closely with children and families, so I may make my way back to it after exploring!

Thanks, Tammy, for all you do for The Children’s Place!
